Review by Milez Das (Rohit Shivdas) ★★★★
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Enclosed in their love for the first time they both have felt. Yoon-Joo while picking up some material for her art project watches Ji-Soo selling some old papers. Yoon-Joo finds herself drawn to her as they meet again where they share a cigarette. When Yoon-Joo comes to know about the feeling is mutual about the attraction, soon Yoon-Joo and Ji-Soo start to date.
They create their own bubble of love, which is sweet and beautiful. With creating warm and joyous moments together before Ji-Soo moves back to her home town, they both step into their own world of reality and acceptance between their friends. While Yoon finds acceptance in her best friend, she gets silence from her roommate.

The struggle to place the shared experience of a queer life (together) between the spaces of a heteronormative routine. Its ending lies somewhere beyond hope or despair—it felt like I was seeing them slide into an acceptance of this asynchronous love, fractured by time and circumstance, and mended in equal capacity by the wordlessness of physical contact. On the one hand, an unsparing depiction of the day-to-day oppression that threatens to tear queer love apart, perhaps without end, and on the other hand, the affirmation that even despite this, queer love can and will persist.
For how minimalist it is, this movie packs a huge punch.

Well, damn.
The first half of this is so damn adorable, restrained, and intimate in the best and most genuine ways possible.
The second half departs from a rather short-lived honeymoon phase and is more sobering, complicated, swells with increasing disappointment and desperation and aloofness, and is ultimately revealed to be heartbreaking in the most infuriating and fucked up ways possible.
The eventual torment of the circumstances are exacerbated by:
😩 - This being Yoon-ju's seemingly first love (maybe first relationship?) and first experience with a woman.
😡 - Having to endure the crush of oppressive norms/expectations part and parcel of a strict, antiquated cisheteronormative patriarchal society.
I dug the ambiguity of the ending. Is this the end or just the beginning?
Overall, I really appreciate the way writer/director Lee Hyun-Ju tells this story, even if I "hate" a good portion of it. I found her portrayal of the tailspin, awkwardness, vulnerability, and agony of love and heartbreak incredibly authentic.

People are gay, Korea...
This was lovely and sad, I really want to try to catch more small Korean films, female directed ones even better.

the film perfectly describes their yearning and eagerness to find comfort in each other in an attempt to hide from the heteronormative world. but the bitter lies and their lack of ability to articulate their feelings slowly fractures their love bubble. the silence in the air, all the things left unsaid between the two of them speaks volumes and it tore me apart. the minimalist take and the melancholic narrative of a cute sapphic couple is something that can be very personal to me. i wish things would have turned out differently.

Review by Emerson Goo
News has broken that the director of this film was recently accused and found guilty of sexually assaulting another filmmaker. This is not a fun thing to have to say about what I thought was the best Korean film of 2016, by a country mile, but I still wanted to share this information for other (potential) viewers.
My initial star rating (4.5) still stands because it's a snapshot of how I feel about a film at a particular point in time. However, I cannot support this film right now, and I cannot recommend it.
